📊 Bahrain GP - Race | Top Speeds

Alonso earned 4 points by overtaking on track despite having the worst top speed of any driver (except VER, who lacked slipstream/overtake mode in the dry, and BOT, who retired early)!

Legend:
🔴 Overtake Mode/Slipstream
⚪️ Free air

- McLaren/Alpine had the highest top speeds.
- RBR/Aston the lowest.

📊 Bahrain GP - Race | Race Pace
(with a revamped look!)

VER won through sheer pace: +0.36s/lap quicker than next-best ANT!

Ferrari had a terrible Sunday start (issues during the formation lap, wrong tyre choice), but LEC and HAM recovered through excellent pace: HAM was just ~0.1s/lap slower than the championship leader!

ALO had the 10th best pace, deserving his points. He also had the lowest top speed of any driver who used overtake mode, making his racecraft even more impressive! 👏

This "Bahrain" GP was great: for next year, let's make the "Spanish GP" at Spa, please! 🤩

📊 Bahrain GP - Practice 2 | Long Runs
Top Teams & Other Teams

ANT was quickest overall, setting excellent lap times on both Mediums and Softs.

LEC was next quickest (on Softs), but both he and HAM suffered from high degradation on that compound.

McLaren was slower than LEC, but managed their tyres far better.

VER's pace on Mediums was excellent despite pretty old tyres. The race outcome could be unpredictable!

📊 Bahrain GP - Practice 2 | Top Speed Distribution

My new analysis, 'Top Speed Distribution', revealed something interesting about FP2... 👀

- BOT, ALB, PER, PIA, GAS, HUL, and STR were playing with deployment: they tested deploying more or less on the main straight, resulting in either high🔋 or very low🪫 top speeds (STR didn't even hit 300 km/h)!
- ANT ran a less powerful mode than RUS for most of the session, but then got full power on a few laps/straights.
- VER (334 km/h) and LEC (330) reached very high top speeds, but just once, and with a slipstream.

⚙️ GP2 ENGINE? WORSE

Alonso would happily make the switch, as the Formula 2 cars were WAY FASTER in the speed trap than he was! 🤯

In FP1, F2s already hit a 322 km/h MEDIAN top speed, which was higher than the HIGHEST (321) reached by both Astons during the GP (so with slipstreams and overtake mode)!

ALO and then STR retired, but with that straight-line performance, they had no chance from the start!

This is the first time I see something like this happen, which tells a lot about the current ICE's power....

F2 cars run a 3400cc turbocharged V6, producing ~620hp at 8700rpm.

It has therefore way less power than the combined ICE + ERS power of an F1 engine, but it's still more powerful than F1's ICE.

And, once the battery runs dry, F1 cars are left with the ICE only: that's why F2 cars can have comparable top speeds at the end of the straights (where the speed trap is located).

Or higher than that, if we are comparing them to the Aston Martin.

📊 Azerbaijan GP - Race | Top Speed per Lap

Bearman reached 350 km/h during the Baku GP, the highest of any driver! 🚀

Similar top speed to the one at the start of the ground effect era (351), but far below what BEA himself hit last year (361).

RUS reached 329 with NO OVERTAKE MODE OR SLIPSTREAM!

ANT showed the extent of Mercedes' straight-line performance, hitting the highest average top speed (343) during his comeback.

📌 NOTES ON Azerbaijan GP!

- Hard to decide who was Driver of the Day between RUS and VER! Fantastic fight. RBR looked good on the straights.
- Excellent comeback by ANT, who cut his losses.
- 3rd podium for HAD.
- LEC got a decent P4 after a terrible start.
-McL has the same PU as Mercedes, yet on tracks with long straights they perform much worse. I think their gearing is the culprit (the shortest on the grid, by far).
- Excellent result by LIN and Haas
- Won't be a nice afternoon in the Alpine box...

Who was your F1 Driver of the Day? Mine is VER!

📊 Azerbaijan GP - Race | Pit-corrected Race Pace

(Impacted by traffic ⚠️)

- RUS had the best pace on track, but VER spent the whole race behind PIA and RUS! Mercedes likely had the upper hand, yet RBR performed brilliantly here.
- Ferrari was way back: LEC 0.66 s/lap slower than RUS despite also running in free air for most of the race.
- PIA was only marginally quicker than LEC before the lockup, and struggled afterwards.
- BEA was the best midfielder pace-wise, yet LIN finished in front of both Haas.
- William's pace was terrible: SAI was helped by the SC, then he 'survived' long enough to score points!

Formula Data Analysis BEST SECTORS: LEC did well by almost matching RUS in sector 1, but his best sector 2 was still 4 tenths away of Russell's. McL was next quickest in S2, Alpine (Mercedes PU) in S3 (where McL still struggled despite having the same PU).
RUS vs LEC TELEMETRY:

Here's a question:
Can we still call it "F1" (or even "motorsport") when a ~1000 hp car stays flat-out for 600m and barely gains any speed by the end? 😢

AERO PERFORMANCE
:
Mercedes smashed everyone's championship hopes by taking pole by 0.837s: LEC (P2) was way closer to P9 (-0.684s) than to RUS! 🤯

And that's on the 15th quali of the season, despite significant upgrades from the other teams.

RUS was fastest in every sector, had by far the best top speed (331 km/h, vs just 322 km/h for "best ICE" RBR and 321 km/h for RBs, same as Aston), and no shortage of energy: he crossed the line 16 km/h faster than he was at the start of the lap.

ANT will overtake everyone but RUS!

Read on for the full extent of their dominance

🛠 Ferrari's Aduo 2 Upgrade

So it's confirmed: Ferrari's 'ADUO 2' upgrade (which only HAM had in Madrid) was significant, providing 18hp more in some crucial phases (peak power on corner exit, between 260-310 km/h, in the clipping area) and similar performance elsewhere! 🚀

This debunks a lasting myth: that one F1 manufacturer (RBPT?) can have the best ICE but not the best ERS.
- Ferrari's upgraded ICE made their clipping vastly better, which is exactly what you'd expect, since all energy comes from the ICE anyway!
- Having the best ICE almost guarantees having the best ERS too, and thus the best performance.

⚙️ I might have just witnessed the most powerful naturally-aspirated F1 car in existence, and you'll love the story behind it! 🔥

Ingo Gerst, owner of the Boss GP Championship, invited me into his box. Among the F1 and F2 cars was a 2006 Toro Rosso.

That year, F1 switched from 3000cc V10s (~950hp) to 2400cc V8s (~750hp).

Toro Rosso received a concession: they could keep using the V10 for one more year, with an intake restriction to cut its power.

Ingo bought the car, removed the restriction to restore its full power, and as the original spare parts ran out, replaced them with newly designed ones, making the car even more powerful (and reliable): it now revs to 20100rpm!

I mean, look at the size of those radiators…
