HACK BASICS (theory + practice):
Writing a Lisp interpreter

We continue our discovery of what programming and computation are in the essence. Previously we've successfully implemented a Turing machine emulator. However programs for the Turing machine do not look like programs in real languages. This time we'll implement an easily readable Lisp-like programming language able to work with numbers and strings.

What we'll learn and implement:

• Chomsky hierarchy of grammars (brief theory)
• Types of syntactic analysis (brief theory)
• Lexical analysis with a finite state machine
• Syntactic analysis with a simple recursive LL(1) parser
• S-expressions
• Garbage collection (optional)
• Lambda functions, closures
• "map", "filter", "reduce" and other typical higher-order functions

Bring a laptop with a compiler/interpreter of your choice.
