El 20 de julio de 2001, durante el apogeo del movimiento contra la globalización capitalista, cientos de miles de personas se movilizaron en Génova, Italia, para oponerse a la cumbre del G8. Durante las manifestaciones masivas de esos dias, un oficial de policía llamado Mario Placanica disparó y mató a un manifestante de 23 años llamado Carlo Giuliani.
