🇷🇺🇯🇵🇺🇦Russian authorities detained Japanese journalist Yuki Imai, 34, in Sakhalin on espionage charges.
The FSB says he collected information on the number of Russian troops moved from the Kuril Islands to fight in Ukraine, and he now faces 10 to 20 years in prison.
Imai had been visiting Russia since at least 2014, studied at Saint Petersburg State University, and this summer traveled across Russia’s Far East, spoke with local residents and researched the history of Japanese prisoners of war. His reporting covered State Duma elections, Russia–North Korea relations and the presence of North Korean nationals on Sakhalin.
