🇮🇶 | The Iraqi Parliament has appointed Laith al-Khazali as deputy prime minister.

Al-Khazali is a senior figure in the Islamic Resistance of Iraq's faction Asaib Ahl al-Haq, which is led by his brother, Hujjat al-Islam Qais al-Khazali. Both brothers are under U.S. sanctions. Laith al-Khazali was arrested by U.S. forces in 2007 over his alleged involvement in the January 2007 attack in Karbala that killed five U.S. soldiers. He was released from U.S. custody in June 2009.
