— A foreign-made smartwatch reportedly being worn by a senior IRGC official, as seen in a recently released photograph, has raised questions about the security protocols of the security forces themselves. The device has been identified as a Samsung Galaxy Watch, a commercial smartwatch with capabilities including GPS/location tracking, biometric monitoring, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a built-in microphone, and synchronized notifications and communications. If the photograph is authentic and the device and its use are independently confirmed, this would raise serious security questions, particularly regarding the use of commercially available connected devices in sensitive environments. The concern becomes even more significant in light of previous security breaches that have reportedly resulted in major casualties and the loss of senior leadership. From allowing foreign visitors, vloggers, or suspicious individuals access to sensitive environments under the pretext of internal or institutional visits, to permitting potentially compromised devices near senior officials, such vulnerabilities need to be examined seriously. The issue should therefore not be reduced to one smartwatch, but considered as part of the broader question of operational security, access control, communications security, and counterintelligence protocols surrounding senior officials.
