Genre is a historically established, stable variety of a work of art, defined by the unity of formal and substantive features. It serves as a kind of "framework" or model that sets the reader's expectations and guides the author's creative search. The basis for distinguishing a genre may be theme, plot, composition, volume, the manner of depicting reality, or emotional tonality. The genre system is mobile: some genres fall into the past, others emerge, and still others are transformed under the influence of new literary movements.
