What was the name of the ex-admissions officer at MIT who lied about everything on her application? ©Quora
Marilee Jones.
I knew Marilee and I liked her and I was very impressed by her.
Marilee was like a Greek tragic hero. She made a big mistake (falsely claiming some college degrees). It was a serious moral mistake. But then she moved on to do heroic things in her job. She was very bright. She was very hard-working. Most of all she really believed in her job. She dedicated herself to the process of getting students who had great promise into MIT. She didn’t do it the easy way with just scores and grades. She was a wonderful dean of admissions.
Then she dedicated herself to protecting applying students from the abuses of the system and their parents. Things had been, and continue to be, out-of-control. The competition to get a prestigious college admission had become much more than a process to get students a good education.
She went national and appealed for people, and especially parents, to give the kids a break. Today, when we hear about the college admissions scandals, we see the extremes that Marilee was trying to protect against.
But like in most Greek tragedies, her dirty little secret came out. You have to give Marilee some credit here. She did not argue that by now she had proved herself and therefore her college education credentials didn’t matter. She didn’t cry foul. She didn’t say that this was because of her gender. Instead, she recognized her moral failings and that she had to be a role model especially for student applicants, so she resigned. With dignity. She was right that she had to resign. Her mistake was moral and fundamental.
Still, it was a tragedy and it was a shame.
