The middle class is usually defined as households earning between two-thirds and twice the national median income.
For example, in the US, that's roughly $56,000 to $170,000. In Germany, it's about €30,000 to €90,000.
And it's not just income — 59% of Americans can't even cover a $1,000 emergency without taking a loan.
In 1971, more than 60% of Americans belonged to the middle class.
