🧠 Dopamine is a neurotransmitter — a chemical in the brain that helps neurons communicate. It plays a key role in motivation, learning, and decision-making.
A common misunderstanding is that dopamine = pleasure. In reality, dopamine is more about “wanting” than “liking.” It increases when your brain expects a reward, not necessarily when you receive it.
How it works:
1. You see a reward or goal (food, message, achievement)
2. Dopamine levels increase in anticipation
3. Your brain pushes you to act to get that reward
4. After receiving it, dopamine often drops again
Why it matters:
• It drives habits and addictions
• It makes you repeat actions that feel rewarding
• It is strongly linked to focus and motivation
Important fact:
Fast rewards (social media, games, junk food) can overstimulate dopamine systems, making slower activities (studying, long-term goals) feel less interesting.
