At the "Great. The Image of Women in Russian Art" exhibition at the Russian Museum, you’ll encounter paintings that conceal entire eras and extraordinary destinies which shaped the nation’s history.
To coincide with the exhibition, VTB’s podcast “Cultural Country” has launched a special season of immersive audio plays, where heroines from famous Russian portraits tell their stories in the voices of MXAT actresses.
The focus of the latest episode is Karl Bryullov’s renowned painting depicting a German princess who became a great Russian duchess—and one of the most influential women in 19th-century Russia.

"Fair Elaine", 1874
Artist: Toby Edward Rosenthal (1848–1917)
🔥 Elaine of Astolat, from Arthurian legend, died of unrequited love for Lancelot. After he’s wounded in a tournament, she nurses him back to health. When he leaves, refusing her love but offering support for her future husband, heartbroken Elaine dies ten days later. She arranges her funeral: placed on a bier with a letter, set adrift down the river to Camelot. The letter, read before King Arthur’s court, declares her love, requests burial, and a mass for her soul.

"Ferns in the Forest", 1895
Artist / Isaac Ilyich Levitan
(1860–1900)
🖼🖼🖼
Oil on canvas
82×126 cm
🌲 Levitan profoundly deepened the emotional resonance of landscape painting, capturing the subtlest nuances of natural life. His approach remains objective—he doesn’t impose his emotions onto nature, nor does he distort it to serve his mood.
