“Libyan Sibyl,” 1512

Artist: Michelangelo Buonarroti
(1475–1564)

Fresco

Sibyls were priestesses and seers who served no single temple. They travelled from city to city, delivering prophecies. The Libyan Sibyl—Libya being the Greek name for Africa—is remarkable for having spoken out against idol worship and the entire system of Greek pagan religion as early as 700 years before the birth of Christ.

She is shown in the traditional manner, holding a massive book, her body turned in a complex pose, with graceful legs and a finely proportioned figure. These hallmarks of the High Renaissance are brought to life by Michelangelo’s extraordinary ability to make his creations feel alive. The Sibyl seems poised to share something important that has been revealed to her. The book beside her clearly evokes sacred scripture, lending an air of certainty to her prophecy.
