**Demyanovo. The Dacha Where I Lived**, 1903–1917
**Artist:** Apollinary Vasnetsov
(1856–1933)
Canvas, oil
64 × 91.1 cm
In this study, Vasnetsov captures his personal feeling for the Russian country estate as a world with its own identity and traditions. The theme of childhood spent on an estate resonated with artists and audiences at the turn of the century. Like many who had left village life behind in their youth, Vasnetsov felt nostalgic for his rural childhood—and that longing helped shape his choice of subject.
In the corner of the terrace is the artist’s son, Vsevolod, whose childhood unfolded in Demyanovo’s “estate paradise.” The painting’s style is intensely personal, with an expressive quality reminiscent of handwriting.
The landscape highlights what made the Russian country estate so appealing: the quiet charm of familiar daily life, a sense of continuity across generations, and a close bond with art and nature.
