This early genre painting by Alexei Kolessov depicts one of the most recurring themes found in Russian folk songs.

An aging soldier, returning home from military service, meets a young peasant woman along the way. She carries two full buckets of water balanced on a yoke. A small boy, holding her hand, watches the weary traveler with cautious curiosity.
