🗝 Levitan depicted the Gor'ki estate in the Tver Governorate, located on the shore of Lake Ostrovenskoye. The estate belonged to Privy Councillor Turchaninov, and Levitan had a romantic relationship with the councillor’s wife.

For a time, the artist lived in Gor'ki, where Anna Turchaninova had a studio built for him. The sketches and studies for this piece were made directly from nature.
