🌊 Shishkin painted this work after a journey to the source of the Volga River. In the spring of 1890, he traveled to the village of Volgoverkhovye in the Ostashkov district of Tver Province, accompanied by photographer Yevgeny Vishnyakov.

Following the trip, the artist created several landscapes, including Forest Chapel.
