NASA's Curiosity rover accidentally discovered pure sulfur crystals → on Mars, an unprecedented find since elemental sulfur on its own has never been observed there before.
This unexpected discovery in the Gediz Vallis channel challenges scientists to explain how these sulfur crystals formed in a location previously not associated with such conditions.
Finding a field of stones made of pure sulfur is like finding an oasis in the desert,
said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity's project scientist.
