🦾 Robotic Palm with Human-Like Touch
Robotic hands have traditionally focused on enhancing finger dexterity, often neglecting the palm, which results in limited overall functionality. MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) has addressed this by developing GelPalm, a robotic palm with high-resolution tactile sensors and structural compliance. The design allows the palm to deform and adapt like a human hand, providing detailed and delicate precision in handling objects.
The GelPalm → uses advanced gel-based, flexible sensors and color illumination technology to create detailed 3D surface models, enhancing robotic interactions.
Additionally, the team has developed robotic fingers, called ROMEO (RObotic Modular Endoskeleton Optical), featuring similar sensing technology and passive compliance. This enables the fingers to adjust naturally to forces without needing extra control mechanisms.
