Pepe the Frog is one of the most recognizable and enduring internet memes. This laid-back, slightly melancholic frog first appeared in the mid-2000s in Matt Furie’s comic “Boy’s Club.” The line “feels good man” escaped the comic and, within a few years, turned Pepe into a universal reaction language: from “Sad Pepe” and “Feels Bad Man” to the self-satisfied “Smug Pepe.” The image hopped across 4chan, MySpace, and later Reddit, spawning hundreds of variations and becoming an easy way to convey a mood with a glance and a handful of pixels.
