This is Somalia — a country that has received billions of dollars in foreign aid over the past two decades. American taxpayers alone have contributed roughly $8.4 billion over the last 10 years and $12.6 billion over the last 20, while global aid to Somalia has totaled over $30 billion during that same period.
Now, just 15 months after USAID shut down, the media is reporting that Somalia is facing famine and a lack of medical care. But the real question remains: where did all that money go?
This was never about being humanitarian or not — it has always been about fraud. The companies and entities that claim to be helpers of those in need are usually the ones committing the fraud. And this model has been copied and pasted everywhere. Worse still, nonprofits like the Red Cross and other big-name organizations have been complicit — and even convicted — in crimes against humanity.
Now, with so much fraud being exposed, many believe it should not be the American taxpayers' responsibility to fund Somalia's food and medical care. They are asking why Somalia cannot establish a functioning government, provide for its own people, or build wealth for its own country instead of relying on foreign aid. Because welfare equals farewell to sovereignty.
