Phenylephrine is the key ‘useless’ ingredient — but all those ingredients are useless. It is the medication used as a decongestant for uncomplicated nasal congestion, used to dilate the pupil, used to increase blood pressure & used to relieve hemorrhoids — yes hemorrhoids.

Common side effects when taken by mouth or injected include nausea, vomiting, headache & anxiety. Severe side effects may include a slow heart rate, intestinal ischemia, chest pain, kidney failure & tissue death. It is unclear whether its use during pregnancy & breastfeeding is safe.
