“I got the COVID vaccine and nothing bad ever happened to me," is a comment you have likely heard.
But that experience doesn’t tell us what happened to someone who received a different batch.
As @P_McCulloughMD explains in this clip, the 2023 analysis by Max Schmeling and colleagues found that just 4.2% of COVID vaccine batches accounted for 71% of suspected adverse events. Other batches had remarkably few reports.
Early in the rollout, my colleagues and I noticed that patients reported either quite strong reactions or almost none. I suspected that difficulties manufacturing the mRNA vaccines at scale were producing substantial differences between lots.
But vaccine “hot lots” aren't a new problem.
