Men's cognitive performance drops when they're around a woman they like

Men who found the woman more attractive tended to respond more slowly afterward. Men also tried harder to impress women than they did when speaking to other men.

Men didn't even need to see or speak to a woman for their cognitive performance to suffer. participants were simply told they would later be observed by someone with a male or female name. The interaction never even happened. Yet the male participants who expected a woman performed significantly more slowly on the cognitive test. Neither experiment showed a corresponding significant effect among women. The researchers theorized that anticipating an opportunity to impress a woman could consume cognitive resources even without an actual encounter. They couldn't establish that as the definitive mechanism.
