Peanut allergy is so common in america because:
- moldy peanuts from the 1980 drought were made into peanut butter. selling peanuts during the drought (even the not so good ones, made farmers lot of money)
- "flatoxin" in peanut butter acted like an adjuvant (meaning made the immune system overreact). this exacerbated the response to peanuts esp in peanut butter
- this then primed young kid's immune systems to treat peanut proteins all together as threats
- since peanut butter (pb n j) is such a distinctly american supermarket food, so is the allergy in the young kids of that era
