Written and directed by Mehdi and Hadi Zarei, Khatemeh is a poignant and powerful documentary that focuses on the life of a 14-year-old Afghan girl living with her family in Shiraz. Following her sister’s mysterious suicide, Khatemeh is coerced into marrying her brother-in-law, a traumatic turn that propels her into seeking refuge at a shelter. With the support of a social worker, she begins the difficult and emotionally fraught journey to secure a divorce in a country where women face immense obstacles to independence.
Despite relentless pressure from her family and community to remain silent, Khatemeh proves to be a determined and rebellious young girl, resolutely standing up for herself in a society that offers few options for girls like her. Victimized by constant verbal and physical abuse, Khatemeh remains unbowed in her fight for autonomy, embodying both the vulnerability and strength of a girl caught between oppressive tradition and her own will to break free.
