Tell Spring Not to Come This Year (1) • Directed by Saeed Taji Farouky and Michael McEvoy • 2015 • Afghanistan / UK

When NATO’s International Security Assistance Force handed over security efforts in Afghanistan to the newly formed Afghan National Army, these soldiers were forced to contend with misfortune beyond their imagination. Tell Spring Not to Come This Year is an influential, beautifully crafted documentary that follows the grim and intense lives of Afghan National Army soldiers as they courageously fight the Taliban completely on their own after the US withdrew troops from the country. These soldiers are left with little equipment and almost no salary, with only hope and a bond of brotherhood to unite them.

This documentary carries urgency and power in each shot, and above all it is an intelligent, original, intricate, and well-directed film. The mood of the soundtrack perfectly matches the cinematic melancholy and romanticism. The documentary’s intentional slowness causes the pace to slink sensuously and creates a feeling of deep dolor that may be felt throughout the entire film.
