Our Home • Directed by Sam Soleimani & Iman Hamidi • 2020 • Iran

A tense and compelling look at Hossein Movafagh’s two sons, Our Home captures the solitude and misery experienced by these brothers. Their father was a popular singer whose life transformed after the Revolution of 1979. After moving to the Netherlands with his new wife, his two adult sons remained in Iran, living in a big, isolated house without any amenities.

The documentary features rich and heart-rending images of the dilapidated house, which is filled with debris, rickety furniture, stray cats, and two emaciated, abandoned, and drug-addicted young men. The last scene leaves a lasting imprint on audiences’ minds: the filmmaker returns to the house and finds that bricks are blocking the door and windows, but the peak of the drama comes when the audience realizes that no one knows what happened to the two brothers.
