Reluctant Bachelor (2) • Directed by Mehdi Bagheri • 2011 • Iran
Upon going bankrupt, a family's life collapses, and the narrator blames his father for the misfortunate. As a result, this young man is unable to leave his family and find independence. Now thirty years old, and having not spoken with his father in almost two years, the narrator decides to interview various members of his family — including his mother, grandfather, brother, and uncle — in order to investigate the source of the rupture, the unrest, and his failed youth. To intensify the drama, he uses family photographs and old video tapes to help paint a picture of the breakdown of his family, of which the culprit was nothing more than an unjust economic system and financial hardship.
This emotive documentary more than anything explores the unavoidable gap between the generations — parent and child — and the unresolved issues between them while critiquing a system in which the youth is unable to survive. Reluctant Bachelor is a heartbreaking and daring examination of adolescence and family strife.
