Runaway (2) • Directed by Kim Longinotto & Ziba Mir-Hosseini • 2000 • Iran/United Kingdom

In Tehran, Iran, a group of young girls takes refuge in a women's shelter after they run away from the hardships and suffering experienced in their neglectful, abusive families. This documentary is a compelling feminist work, filled with powerful images that highlight the plight of female victims of oppression and discrimination. Longinotto and Mir-Hosseini’s observational camera seeks out the social change that is already underway, and the individuals in their documentary are firmly presented as the subjects of politics. There is a strong feeling of compassion and respect for the young girls, and, what is more, the emotional and heartfelt bond between them is exceptionally palpable.
