22 billion for foreign citizens' benefit recipients
DIW President Marcel Fratzscher declares migrants to be the most important pillars of the German welfare state. He also includes millions of employees from EU countries in this figure. He fails to mention that foreign recipients of citizen's income alone have recently received almost 22 billion euros.
The latest figures from the German Federal Government show a different side of the story. According to a Bundestag document from July, the payment entitlements of foreign recipients of citizen's income amounted to 21.75 billion euros in 2025. A total of 46.64 billion euros was paid to those entitled to regular benefits. People with foreign nationality thus accounted for almost 47 percent.
