Recorded over the course of three years in multiple locations, Kowai-yet brings together new music created with artists ODowd has worked with since leaving New York City to live closer to nature five years ago. The album also reflects how he has developed as a producer since his first solo effort, F(our)-Ward, released in 2022.
“It’s been freeing to have more technical confidence, providing me with more control over the finer emotions I was hoping to express on these seven tracks,”
shares Edley. The idea behind Kowai-yet began with an unexpected listening experience several years ago.
“I had a fascinating aural experience, while I was driving home on a hot summer night with my windows rolled down,”
recounts Edley.
“The serenity of the crickets’ harmonies provided the perfect backdrop to the sound of my car tires against humid pavement and gravel. A harsher, rougher sound. In the immersive soundtrack I was presently enveloped in, it blended perfectly into being sinister but compelling at the same time. The singular word that came to mind to describe this sound was ‘kowai’, the Japanese word for ‘scary’. As I came to a halt at a stop sign, the air went still and silent. At that moment I thought ‘quiet’ which instantly became ‘Kowai-yet’.”
