The years leave their evidence everywhere. You think you have outgrown a person simply because you have grown around them. But memory is stubborn.
It leaves fingerprints on the life you build, crumbs beneath the table, handwriting in the margins. The child does not always ask to come back. And perhaps this is what growing older really means: less becoming someone new, more discovering how many old selves have been living inside you all along.
