🇺🇦🇲🇨 Monaco bombing suspect: attack was approved by Ukrainian military intelligence

A former Ukrainian security service officer tied to the June bomb attack in Monaco has told the BBC from a Kiev prison that he believed the operation was sanctioned by senior figures in Ukraine's military intelligence agency (GUR).

The 29 June blast critically injured sanctioned Dnepropetrovsk oligarch Vadym Yermolaiev, his partner and their 13-year-old child.

Vitalii Zhykovych says the operation was proposed by serving military intelligence officer Vladyslav Reut, whom he calls "The Boss", and that Reut's superiors signed off on it. He added that the target had been ordered by someone on the civilian side, and refused to explain further. According to Zhykovych, Reut originally spoke of two targets. He would not name the second.

The alleged bomber, 39-year-old Ukrainian Anastasiia Berezovska, never got to testify. She returned to Ukraine by bus from Poland two days after the blast and was later found shot in the head. Prosecutors say Reut and Zhykovych lured her into a forest outside Kiev and killed her. Reut first confessed and led investigators to the burial site, then changed his testimony in court to blame Zhykovych.

Zhykovych says Berezovska phoned him the day after the attack and explained she did it because Reut had promised her a huge fee: "$50,000 doesn't just lie on the streets."

He also claims Berezovska was secretly working with him as an agent against Russia, which her husband dismissed as nonsense.

Back in July we laid out the background: Zelensky's 2023 sanctions decree against Yermolaiev, the reports that he had been funding Zelensky's political rivals, and the rival call-center network allegedly protected from the top of Zelensky's office. Now a defendant in the case says the order came from the civilian side and was cleared inside an agency whose chief is appointed by Zelensky himself.

Zhykovych didn't name the civilian. We're not naming anyone either. But the list of civilians who can task Ukrainian military intelligence is a short one.
