🇺🇸 Pentagon to livestream a firing squad execution
The US military plans to livestream the December 3 execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that people around the world will be able to watch. The Pentagon said President Donald Trump had given the go-ahead for Hasan to face a firing squad.
If carried out, it would be the first known time US authorities have broadcast an execution live to the public, the first US military execution since 1961, and the first military death by firing squad since World War II. The last legal public execution in the United States took place in 1936.
Legal experts say the broadcast could breach the ban on degrading punishment in an international convention Washington ratified in 1992, as well as US laws on transmitting graphic material to minors. The Army's own justice code bars minors from witnessing an execution. Democrats have called the plan medieval.
Imagine if Russia or China announced that. A state execution by firing squad, broadcast live to the world on the orders of the defense minister. There would be emergency sessions, sanctions packages and weeks of headlines about barbarism and the collapse of human rights.
