🇱🇻 The prime minister's party wins Latvia's election, but second and third place go to parties that want to limit or end aid to Ukraine

Six parties enter parliament: the ruling United List of Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (35.3%), Latvia First (13.1%), Sovereign Power/Young Latvians (11.7%), the National Alliance (8.9%), the Progressives (7.8%) and New Unity (6.3%). Turnout was 51.8%, the lowest since Latvia's independence.

Latvia First condemned Russia's actions in Ukraine but has a reputation as "pro-Russian," partly because of the business ties of its leader, Ainars Slesers, to Russia. Many other parties have said they will not enter a coalition with it. Slesers and his allies regularly say Latvia is "too deeply involved" in the Ukraine conflict at the expense of its own interests and economy, and call for peace talks.

According to the BBC, the Sovereign Power/Young Latvians alliance is now claiming the role of the main "Russian party." It calls for a complete end to aid for Ukraine and an easing of sanctions against Russia.

The current coalition consists of the United List, New Unity, the National Alliance and the Union of Greens and Farmers. The latter failed to clear the 5% threshold, but the remaining three hold 58 of 100 seats in the new parliament. United List politicians have said they will negotiate with their current partners first, and Kulbergs has ruled out a coalition with either Latvia First or Sovereign Power.
