Kiev will begin building backup crossings over the Dnepr next week in case the city's bridges are knocked out, according to Nikolai Kalashnik, Ukraine's Minister for Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport.
The plan relies on earth causeways and pontoon crossings linking the left and right banks. Kalashnik says construction could take up to three months, and the new crossings are meant to provide at least half the capacity of the existing bridges.
"The urgent solutions are a causeway and a pontoon crossing, which can be built quickly. This work has already begun," he said.
Sites have already been chosen. Around 600,000 vehicles cross between the two banks every day, and the authorities hope to preserve as much of that flow as possible.
Further out, officials are looking at a tunnel under the Dnepr and rapidly assembled concrete structures. Those projects could cost tens or even hundreds of billions of hryvnias, so Kiev intends to look for international funding.
