Databricks Data Engineer — EY

EY is looking for a Databricks Data Engineer to join its Consulting practice. The role focuses on designing, implementing, and developing modern lakehouse platforms for clients in Cyprus and international markets.

Main responsibilities:
• design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and lakehouse architectures using Databricks;
• develop and optimize Spark-based ETL/ELT workloads using PySpark and/or Scala;
• work with Delta Lake, including bronze/silver/gold layers, schema evolution, partitioning, time travel, and ACID transactions;
• build ingestion pipelines from relational databases, files, APIs, and streaming or near-real-time sources;
• create curated data models for analytics, reporting, BI, and data science;
• work with Databricks notebooks, jobs/workflows, reusable libraries, version control, testing, and deployment;
• optimize Spark jobs by improving joins, partitions, file sizes, caching, cluster configuration, and query execution plans;
• implement data quality, validation, reconciliation, and monitoring checks;
• collaborate with data architects, analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders;
• participate in code reviews, documentation, platform standards, and engineering governance.

Requirements:
• Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field;
• 3–5 years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a related field;
• hands-on experience with Databricks, including notebooks, jobs/workflows, clusters, and Delta Lake;
• experience designing medallion architectures and separating raw, cleansed, and business-ready data layers;
• strong knowledge of Apache Spark and distributed data processing;
• hands-on experience with PySpark and/or Scala;
• ability to write, analyze, and optimize PySpark code for large-scale data processing;
• understanding of Databricks Jobs/Workflows or similar orchestration patterns;
• understanding of Spark performance optimization;
• knowledge of Unity Catalog or similar approaches to data governance, access control, and lineage;
• strong SQL skills and experience with SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL;
• understanding of lakehouse and data warehouse modelling, including star schemas, fact/dimension models, and slowly changing dimensions;
• experience developing production-grade ETL/ELT pipelines with logging, error handling, monitoring, and documentation;
• familiarity with cloud data environments, preferably Azure;
• experience working with Parquet, Delta, CSV, JSON, and XML;
• strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, particularly around performance and data quality issues;
• good communication skills and the ability to work in cross-functional consulting teams.
