Read the context! Peter had just declared, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." (Matthew 16:16).
Jesus’ response affirms that this truth—the identity of Christ—is the foundation upon which His church is built.
Biblical Use of "Rock"
The Bible consistently refers to Christ, not Peter, as the true Rock:
"That Rock was Christ." (1 Corinthians 10:4)
"Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone." (Ephesians 2:20)
Nowhere in Scripture is Peter identified as the foundation of the church.
The New Testament presents Christ, not Peter, as the head of the church (Colossians 1:18).
The authority of the church lies in Christ and His Word, not in an earthly leader.
