This is the opposite of the famous "Matthew Effect" where people get a huge long term advantage if they get some initial luck. In fact, initial luck (ie getting in the best class) backfires. But the effect also goes away over time.
This is yet another piece of evidence that the Matthew Effect is overrated. I've now seen lots of contradicting evidence. We should put that theory to bed.
