💎 How GRAM became GRAM

TON blockchain and its native token Gram have a fascinating history. Here's how crypto in Telegram evolved.

📖 First came the name

In 2017, Pavel Durov was choosing a name for Telegram's new cryptocurrency.

The idea was to give it a simple, familiar name that would fit naturally into everyday life. That's how Gram was born.

👥 Then came the community

In 2019, Telegram stepped away from the project, and the community continued developing the open-source technology independently. The blockchain later became The Open Network, with Toncoin as its native token.

Toncoin wasn't immediately listed on major exchanges, so @wallet was created as a simple way to buy the coin right inside the messenger.

🔄 The long-awaited return

In spring 2026, Durov announced the MTONGA plan, Make TON Great Again, with 7 steps.

Telegram returned to the project: became the network's largest validator, replaced TON Foundation and taking a leading role in TON's development. The community voted to restore the original name: Toncoin became GRAM again.

⭐️ Gram wallet

Continuing the MTONGA plan, Durov announced a built-in non-custodial wallet. It's already available to select groups and will reach millions of users over the coming weeks.

📈 September keeps the market on edge

Several major events happened this week.

🤚 The CLARITY Act failed to pass

The Senate blocked the bill in a procedural vote. The market reacted instantly: $300M in crypto longs were liquidated in just 20 minutes. BTC is back under selling pressure.

But regulators aren't backing down. SEC Chair Paul Atkins said the agency will deliver regulatory clarity for crypto "with or without legislation." The CFTC is also ready to issue crypto rules on its own.

📈 The Fed raised rates by 25 bps

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh: "Inflation has been too high for too long." The Fed isn't confident inflation is moving toward its target and expects one more rate hike before year-end. Higher rates can put additional pressure on crypto and equities, while making more conservative assets relatively more attractive.

🪙 The US is moving toward a Bitcoin reserve

The House Committee approved a bill to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, under which the US would hold BTC as a government reserve asset.

Brent crude is back above $100 for the first time since July, clearing a key psychological level. WTI is closing in on the same mark.

📈 Oil is up more than 10% over the past month. Behind the rally: escalating tensions in the Middle East. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen to multi-year lows, and alternative supply routes are under threat.

☀️ September could get hot

August shook things up and September could be even more eventful. Here's what happened and what to watch for next.

📈 Inflows and liquidations

In August, institutional investors poured record yearly inflows into crypto funds: +$3.3B in BTC and +$1.5B in ETH. Interest in BTC and ETH remains high.

At the same time, the market saw its largest liquidations in months: $9.71B over the last two weeks of August, including $6.55B in shorts and $3.16B in longs.

🔼 Will rates rise in September?

On August 28, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh signaled a potential rate hike in September. BTC dropped from $81,000 to $77,000 the same day.

When rates rise, money can flow into more conservative assets like gold or bonds. Crypto and equities may come under pressure as a result.

✍️ CLARITY Act vote

On September 15, the U.S. Senate may vote on a key piece of legislation — the CLARITY Act. If the vote succeeds, the market could read it as a positive signal. We covered it in detail in our previous post.
