Continuing our Wednesday series on crypto terms, today we’re diving into the meaning of "Token".
In the crypto world, a token is a digital unit of value that operates on an existing blockchain, such as Ethereum or Binance Smart Chain. Unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which have their own independent blockchains, tokens are typically created and managed on top of another blockchain.
Tokens can serve various functions within the crypto ecosystem. They might represent ownership of assets (like NFTs), provide access to specific services within a decentralized application (dApp), or act as a form of currency within a particular project. For example, many decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms issue their own tokens to reward users or govern the platform.
Tokens are a fundamental component of blockchain technology, enabling the creation of diverse digital assets and innovative financial models across different industries.
