🇺🇸 California moves to restrict political meme coins

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation barring state public officials from issuing meme coins and restricting companies from listing tokens that use officials’ likenesses.

The law also strengthens crypto-fraud restitution, money-laundering enforcement and the seizure of digital assets linked to transnational criminal networks. It expands consumer protections covering ticket sales, reservations and personal data.

Newsom’s office described the measure as an anti-corruption effort, pointing to President Donald Trump’s meme coin as an example of the risks of officials profiting from speculative tokens.
