Jimmy Somerville (Bronski Beat), Melody Maker [June 1984]:
"The name Bronski Beat actually comes from Günter Grass's novel 'The Tin Drum'. There's a character in it called Jan Bronski, and Steve had already adopted that as his surname. We just thought it had a great, hard European sound to it. We added 'Beat' because we wanted to combine that literary, slightly bleak political imagery with something energetic and danceable that people could move to."
