Allmight was a symbol of peace for around 40 years. After he found out from Nighteye that he's going to die soon if he continues to be a hero, he started to be in the mindset of "well, anything doesn't matter, I'll die anyway" because "every Nighteye's vision came true". Toshi gave his quirk to Deku, finally finding a successor to teach for the rest of his life. But he didn't know that All for One was going to come back. This is why, after that, he's been carrying a burden, regretting everything he has done, because now, this burden is on Midoria too. After his last battle before retirement, he became "invisible" to the people around. "I decided to keep of living. How do I put this...I feel so powerless, like nothing I try really matters" basically he was just in the "I'll die anyway" mindset this entire time since Nighteye. But he still tries to help Midoria in season 6, despice him feeling powerless that he can't do more, he's packing him lunches but Midoria ends up pushing Allmight away, which is making Toshi spiral even more. After Deku's return at the end of season 6, Toshi has completely spiraled, he doesn't remember who he is or was. "I couldn't even protect him (Deku) from himself. The answer is clear, I'm a failure." Stain made him believe in himself again though, so this is why we have a season 7 scene of Allmight fighting AFO, now with the mindset "I don't care if I die" which also sucks bc he promised Midoria and others that he will keep living and now he's pushing himself back to the battle like wtf dude. He never was afraid of dying, his first priority was his loved ones. Always.
"I'll protect your son, even if it costs me my life"
"If anything happens to this young man it'll be over my dead body"
"I'm not dead yet, so come! Do your worst"
"But everyone knows the old master is meant to die, after passing the torch"
Also I absolutely love the symbolism of his black eyes. Because his eyes were black when he started to doubt himself (aka after Nighteye's talk) and after Stain and in the last fight, his eyes were back to normal (always with a badass eyeliner, he's slaying) and are staying this way for the rest of the manga. I love my deeply depressed unhinged queen.
