Vlad Tenev, Robinhood’s cofounder, grew up in Bulgaria. During the hyperinflation of the 1990s, his grandparents’ pensions quickly lost almost all of their value.
Thinking resourcefully, his grandfather started buying copper pots and pans to preserve their family’s savings. He had no easy way to invest in other things, so he filled a cupboard in his apartment with copper cookware. Vlad later described those pots as his family’s original store of value.
