The owner of this little bird, seriously loved him. Small coffin of a canary belonging to a coal miner.

The inscription reads: "In memory of little Joe. He died November 3, 1875. He was 3 years old."

"Canaries mining" were birds used during the sixteenth and early twentieth centuries in coal mines, to alert miners to the presence of toxic gases, which were difficult to detect by humans and posed a risk of choking or explosion.
