The camera in Mad Max doesn't predict anything prior to character knowledge

I learned about this in school. We were shown PT Anderson's Cigarettes and Coffee and our teacher pointed out a mistake PTA made where he moved the camera in the scene from a characters hand, then panned to an ashtray, and then the character placed the cigarette in the ashtray. When he pointed it out, it became clear why it was so jarring and felt so weird. Ideally, the character would move their hand before the camera.
