" In addition to how much we use media, how we use it makes a difference, too. A key determinant of whether immersing ourselves in social media elevates us or depresses us is how actively we participate. Do you passively look at other people’s profiles, scrolling through without communicating? Or do you comment, like, and post your own news and pictures? It’s the more passive use — lurking — that is most likely leave us feeling down, left out, and unhappy that our lives seem much less exciting than the lives of our friends. To enjoy social media optimally, we need to respond to others; just as in real life, we need to participate. By actively participating when we are online, and by being mindful and proactive about the addictive potential of our gadgets, we can reap considerable benefits and joys without crowding out or distracting us away from valuable offline experiences."
