Israel was prepared to shoot down the FlyDubai passenger jet carrying more than 150 Israelis if it had been confirmed hijacked and continued toward Israel, two Israeli sources say.

Under the protocol, fighter jets would first inspect the cockpit and cabin and try to establish contact.

If the aircraft was deemed hijacked, remained silent and kept approaching Israel, Netanyahu could authorize it to be shot down to prevent an attack on a major target.
