The White House is monitoring a suspected plague case in Russia’s Irkutsk region after a 28-year-old anti-plague institute worker died following a laboratory accident.

Daria Shipilova broke a test tube containing the pneumonic plague pathogen on Sept. 25, was hospitalized with severe pneumonia on Sept. 29 and died between Oct. 1–2.

Authorities quarantined several medical facilities and placed nearly 200 contacts under observation. So far, all have tested negative and shown no symptoms.
